ATS has been awarded of the contract for the erection of the new DeNOx SCR units in Monthyon WtE (France)

The VEOLIA group is one of the world leaders in the optimized management of resources. With nearly 169,000 employees, VEOLIA designs and provides integrated solutions for the management of water, waste and energy to contribute to the sustainable development of communities and industries. In 2017, the VEOLIA group produced nearly 55 million megawatt hours of energy and converted 47 million tons of waste into new materials and energy.

Looking to the future, VEOLIA has identified seven main innovative themes, sectors with high-income deposits in which the need for advanced skills is increasing, driven by pressure on resources (a topic that has always been very important to the group). These sectors correspond to the new boundaries of environmental professions, in which Veolia already has important references:

  • Circular economies, to make the scarcity of raw materials, water or energy;
  • Innovative solutions designed to optimize the functioning of cities and their services;
  • The treatment of the most difficult pollutants: toxic waste, residual sludge from treatment plants, waste water;
  • Demolition operations: offshore platforms, ships, airplanes, nuclear power plants;
  • The agri-food sector, subjected to very high quality and phytosanitary safety requirements;
  • The mining industry, a great resource consumer;
  • The fossil fuel industry, with its strong environmental limitations.

It was precisely this drive towards a circular economy and innovative solutions that pushed VEOLIA to secure the renewal of the Monthyon waste-to-energy plant management contract. Contract within which a reduction of 5 times the quantity of nitrogen oxides is foreseen, thus reducing, in a decisive manner, the impact of greenhouse gases and their relapse in the surrounding areas.

Aereal view of Monthyon Waste-to-Energy plant

The Monthyon Waste-to-Energy (WtE), part of the Integrated Treatment Center (CIT), consists of three incineration lines, two of which are the same, in particular:

  • 2 grid furnaces L1 and L2, capacity 2 x 7 t / h at a PCI 2.200 kcal/kg
  • 1 L4F fluidized bed furnace, with a capacity of 4 t / h at a PCI 2.200 kcal/kg

In this framework, VEOLIA has decided to entrust ATS with the construction of two new low temperature SCR DeNOx units that will be installed downstream of the existing fabric filters. Furthermore, a modular casing configuration will allow the thermal regeneration of a portion of the catalyst while the other compartments will be able to manage the totality of the flow without any load reduction in the boiler. This will allow maximum performance even at temperatures where it would normally start to form ammonium bisulfate on the surface of the catalyst.
