ATS completed the commissioning of oxydizing catalyst for CO removal into the HRSG in Scandale (Italy)

Ergosud S.p.A. (50% EPH and 50% A2A gencogas) is the company that built and manages the 814 MW Thermoelectric Plant (Installed Net Capacity), located in the municipality of Scandale (KR) in Santa Domenica in the central-eastern area of Calabria, a few kilometers away from the Ionian coast. The plant is one of the most advanced and modern power generation plants, thanks to the use of the innovative combined cycle technology.

The Scandale Thermoelectric Powerplant, in commercial operation since June 2010, adopts the most advanced constructive technologies in order to minimize the environmental impact and to optimize the efficiency (which reaches 56.67%, one of the best values achievable with this type of system). The plant, set up for cogeneration, is characterized by the presence of two identical CGGT (Cycle Combined Gas Turbine) combined modules, each of which consists of a gas turbine and related electric generator, an heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), from a steam turbine and its electric generator, from a main transformer with three windings and an air condenser. The combustion system is of DLN (Dry Low NOx) type with very low emission of NOx, CO and particulate.

The steam and recovery generator (HRSG) is of the horizontal development type, with three levels of pressure with re-heater. Its main components are:

• High pressure (HP), medium pressure (MP), low pressure (BP) heat exchanger and heat recovery unit;
• Drums of HP, MP and BP complete with hydrometric columns and accessories;
• 60 m chimney;
• Degaser;
• Ring combustion chamber with 24 low NOx dry burners and combustion zone surrounding the inlet section of the first turbine stage;
• Catalytic CO Oxidation System.

This last point, for the first HRSG module, it has been recently the subject of a call for tender that ErgoSud assigned to ATS.

In particular ATS has been entrusted with the task of designing and installing the CO emission reduction system so as to obtain a yield > 98% and thus be able to meet the stringent emission limits imposed by the authorities even in the start-up and plant shutdown phases. In particular, during this intervention, our activities concerned:

• The sizing and positioning of the catalytic system;
• The design and construction of the catalyst supporting structure;
• Installation of the catalytic system within the HRSG;
• Implementation of test and commissioning procedures.

The net continuous nominal load of each module (considered at nominal operating conditions) with the plant at full load, is 417 MW, for a total of the plant of 834 MW.
